26 May 08 Deccan Chronicle and Financial Chronicle to enter Bangalore

Deccan Chronicle and Financial Chronicle will now be published in Bangalore. This decision by Deccan Chronicle to enter the Bangalore market was informed to the stock markets today. Deccan Chronicle has proved itself as a good new market entrant by successfully capturing a huge chunk of the Chennai market within a year of being launched in Chennai. The strategy adopted by Deccan Chronicle to enter and capture a sizeable chunk of the bangalore market is likely to be a competitive pricing strategy along with an empasis on filling most of the pages of the newspaper with glamourous and masala-filled content. The stock markets reacted positively to Deccan Chronicle entering the bangalore market, with the share prices rising smartly as soon as the announcement was made.

10 Jan 08 Tata Nano from Tata Motors – Specifications of the People’s Car

Tata Nano aka people’s car aka 1 lakh car has finally been released by Tata Motors. Ratan Tata unvieled the People’s car today. Before the release there were rumours that the 1 lakh car was named Tata Jeh. Some liked calling it Tata Indiva. I can’t remember any other new car release getting so much attention. Tata Nano received as much hype and attention which a Rajinikanth movie would get on the day of its release, in TamilNadu. The technical specifications of Tata Nano are as mentioned below.

The specifications of Tata Nano, especially the safety related ones seem really scarry. I guess most people would be better off travelling by a bike rather than using this car. But with India being highly price sensitive, Tata Motors could have just pulled one off. Reactions from competitors, especially from Maruti Udyog Limited is awaited. If Tata Nano becomes a hit and if there is competition in this segment, there would definitely be concerns of an environmental disaster. Tata Nano could lead to lakhs of new automobiles hitting already clogged Indian roads , adding to mounting air and noise pollution. I really doubt if the crowded roads of Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkatta and Bangalore can handly such a stepp increase in automobile traffic.

The new Tamil News Channel launched by RAJ TV will be a 24*7 news channel and will compete with SUN NEWS which is owned by the SUN TV group. The concept of having a dedicated news channel for Tamil News doesn’t look too exciting, when you consider that SUN News itself is not very popular and in terms of revenue doesn’t even come close to that generated by SUN TV and K TV, the other SUN TV group channels. With the RAJ TV group enjoying political favour in Tamilnadu, lets wait and watch how successful Raj TV’s News Channel becomes. RAJ TV’s shareholders are a happy lot, with the share prices of RAJ TV moving up rapidly after the announcement about the new 24*7 news channel launch was made.

04 Jun 07 After Kalaignar TV, its Jai Hind TV

After the DMK, which was recently in the news for planning to launch Kalaignar TV, it now seems to be the turn of its central ally, Congress which proposes to launch Jai Hind TV. Congress is preparing to launch its own TV news channels, in various states and languages in co-ordination with a group of NRI investors. Jai Hind TV seems to be congress’ pilot project which will be launched in Kerala, in the malayalam language, ahead of next month’s Assembly elections. Later, congress plans to launch Jai Hind TV, in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu and Bengali. Are we witnessing a large scale politicisation of Indian media?
