22 May 07 RAJ TV to launch Kalaignar TV named after Kalaignar Karunanidhi
Raj TV has been enjoying both the government patronage and also a steady rise of its share prices ever since the Maran family and the Karunanidhi family feud broke out. This week RAJ TV has announced that it will soon launch a new channel called Kalaignar TV. Kalaignar TV is the first of the 11 channels RAJ TV proposes to launch. The new channel, Kalaignar TV will be a news, current affairs and general entertainment channel. RAJ TV managing director Rajendran, denied that the new channel, Kalaignar TV, has anything to do with the DMK or M. Karunanidhi who is popularly known as Kalaignar (artist). “The name Kalaignar has nothing to do with the DMK or the government. We already had plans to launch 11 channels that have been approved by our board. The Karunanidhi link is a coincidence,” he said. Well, the whole of TN knows that this is not true. I don’t know why RAJ TV managing director Rajendran is denying the fact that RAJ TV is Pro DMK and is now taken the place of SUN TV as the DMK’s media vehicle and political mouthpiece. While RAJ TV is doing extremely well in the stock market, SUN TV’s shares have taken a beating. Any fan of contrarian investment concept would start picking up the SUN TV shares now. Afterall, SUN TV is still the most popular regional channel in south India, by a huge margin.

Your statement is true that sun TV is popular but you never knw what coming in the pipeline for sun TV , the next thing DMK will do is try to introduce a cable bill which will touch the roots of sumangali networks so which is again touching the revenue of SUN Tv , so these things are kept in mind , and also there is rumours that the programmes might also shift from SUN TV to RAJ Kalaingar TV , Producers of the serial are willing to do so .
Interesting comments Ganesh. But I still feel its very tough for RAJ TV to take SUN TV head on and emerge as the winner. Over the years SUN TV has built itself an excellent reputation and has gained huge marketshare. Compare it to RAJ TV, I can’t even recall seeing a single good program on RAJ TV.
Agreed that political support from the DMK party was instrumental in SUN TV’s success, but the rise of SUN TV has also been because of excellent management by Marans who are MBA’s from harvard (Dayanidhi) and Scranton University (kalanidhi)
If political support was all that was required, then SUN TV would have gone bust during the ADMK regime. Further if DMK lose the next election then the RAJ TV story is gone. Also, if marans and DMK make up (there are no permanant friends or foes in polictics) and become friends again, then again the RAJ TV story will end abruptly.
There’s a lot of uncertainity now. So, I prefer to wait and watch. But yeh if SUN TV lose SCV and some good programs, then they are in deep trouble. Marans would be glad that sharathkumar and radhika are no longer with DMK
You are absolutly right its just speculative this stock is going up , but think its also not good time for SUN TV , like im not saying go ahead buy raj tv stock , im just saying dont just go ahead and buy SUN TV stock because its going down .
Yes Ganesh. I agree 100%. SUN TV’s valuations are on the high side. But if SUN TV crashes in the future, making valuations look attractive, I may buy some SUN TV shares.

Suntv shares is not going to go down atleast in a year term. I consider the following points before saying this:
1. Kalanidhi is one of the best business man whose brains will not stop working.
2. DMK family feud will end once the birthday celebrations are over. After its just a family problem. Even if they dont, they might not take drastic steps against the maran’s family.
3. Rajtv has to go a long way in techinical and marketing expertise to capture the suntv market. Even if they get DMK’s support its gonna be tough taks for it. Again in a long term what if DMK doesnt win next elections….Rajtv will crumble like anything unless it makes firm management strategies now itself.
4. SUNTV brand has become a household name and it will difficult for the audience to switch..even if the serials are changing hands….
One example i can give is aratai arangam program was previously hosted by Visu. At some time i thought its because of visu ppl are viewing it. But even after visu moving to jaya the suntv’s aratai arangam is going well. Because kalanidhi knows the right person to call for at difficult times.
@ Rajasekar – Excellent Analysis. I agree with all your points. The Visu example was apt. However, I feel that if radhika moves her top TRP serials to Kalaignar TV, then I guess SUN TV will have to worry a bit. In arattai arangam, a new topic is duscussed in each show. However, when it comes to serials people who have been watching it for months together, will continue watching the serials no matter what channel it is telecast in.

among kalaignar tv, raj tv and sun tv which will be the best? kalaignar tv should be viewed as a separate tv channel and not as part of the raj tv group. kalaignar karunanidhi has a large stake in kalaignar tv but not in raj tv.

Maran is the best, decent, dignified and good mannered guy. Things have never changed with DMK. They couldn’t digest Maran earning good name and fame. Once they troubled MGR and finally, DMK landed in bad shape. This time, they are doing it to Maran. Maran is a decent guy who has not become rich recently. That is why he doesn’t care about these bad politicians. Maran is a star for DMK and it is bad luck to DMK for loosing him. I wish Maran kick DMK’s ASS and show them their place. If they try to give trouble to Maran, it will be like lossing creditials about themselves.
